UPDATE
‘just ate.

On Wednesday morning at 3:24am, I was mugged.
Kyle and Adam, were staying in a hotel and I wasn’t very tired, nor did I want to pay a portion of $54 for 7 hours sleep. So I waited in a very safe and lit truck stop, where I had a shower and watched a couple movies from 9:30ish to 2:45ish. I fell asleep while watching “sunlight” on my computer and decided that I should go somewhere else, because it was weird that I was sleeping in a dimly lit dining area (even thought, they had told me to stay as long as I wanted, it was storming earlier)
So at around 3:00 am, I left the ‘Caltex’ and went into the small town, no bigger than Kingsville. I found a well lit bench in front of a grocery store and under a surveillance camera. It was literally next door to the hotel at which friends were staying, so I sat down, still attached to my backpack and leaned the guitar up against my side. After about 15 minutes, I had fallen asleep for about 25 minutes. I woke up and my guitar case(macbook, wallet, guitar, camera, harmonica, Steven King’s ‘The Stand’) was missing. I stood up and, in a haze looked around the immediate area for it.
3:50 am
Someone was putting newspapers in their shop across the street and I rushed over to him and told him that I had been robbed and didn’t know what to do. He told me to call 000 (like 911) and make a police report. So I ran back to the spot I was standing which was next to a pay phone. I made my police report and they told me to wait for the Police to open up in the morning, since I was in such a small town and they weren’t a 24 hour station.
I sat around and just thought, cause I didn’t know what to do, the hotel door’s were locked and my friends weren’t going to be up until 9:30.
4:45 am
A man with the intentions of cleaning the washrooms behind the grocery, went into the mens room and the door was pushed back at him. Since he assumed someone was using the washroom, he went into his car and headed to the other washrooms in the park across town.
4:50 am
The lights in the grocery store had turned on and I was knocking on the glass periodically for some time until finally a man who was checking stock came up to the glass. I asked “do these camera’s work?” Assuming they were decoys or something. He told me yes, and I responded by telling him what had happened.
5:45 am
By this time, the entire grocery store staff knew what had happened and were being very helpful by giving me tea and fresh fruit and toast. As hopeless as I felt, the concern everyone was showing was a great feeling. People even rounded $25 up for me throughout the staff.
The people working weren’t able to access the security room until the general manager had arrived. So I had to wait.
5:50 am
The custodian returned to the grocery store washrooms (which are outside and to the side of the store) and went back into the mens rooms. A guitar was on the ground, next to a case, a harmonica was in the toilet, and a USB wire was in the corner of the room. He packed it all up and put it in his truck and went on his way. He phoned his son and told him what he had found, and to see if he heard that anyone was missing the items.
7:35 am
The general manager had been to work now and was checking the cameras with some of the staff. He came to me and told me that the thief looked into the camera at one point, but was wearing a hood. When he turned around, there was a distinctive tattoo on his calf. The ‘coppers’ were open at 8:am, so they told me that they would call them and have them send a car over.
8:20 am
The police showed up as a two person team, a woman, Julie Handley and a male officer, I don’t remember his name. The three of us went upstairs to the security room of the grocery store and watched the tape.
The tape was the weirdest, eeriest thing I’ve ever seen. It showed me in a corner of a ‘kitty-corner’ style bench propped up against my bag and a pillar. At 3:24 am a man wearing a black hoody, shorts and holding a pair of red thong sandles walked barefood from behind the pillar towards my sleeping body. He approached me and leaned towards my face. His face was dark with thick dark eyebrows. He flinched once, maybe I had spoken in my sleep, or moved a bit. Then he leaned in again and grabbed my guitar, turned around and disappeared into the darkness.
8:30 am
The police gathered information about the contents of the bad and told me how fortunate I was to had kept my PASSPORT on my person. I gave them the values of my things and asked what I could do to help in anyway. They told me to look around town and they would do some questioning throughout the morning.
I looked around the entire town going down nearly every street and walking through the fields and parks.
9:15 am
I went back towards the hotel and found Kyle waiting out front. I told him what had happened and felt terrible, he offered me a hug, but I kicked him in the face and reminded him that I’m a man. I went into the bar of the hotel and used the asked to use the phone to call the Canadian Consulate in Sydney. The cop was with me, so I had no problems with that. Halfway through the phone call I received a message from the bar owner that a man had found a guitar. I told the man that I had some good news, and he told me to call back when I figure things out.
10:00 am
Me and the man who found my guitar went to the police station together so he could tell them his story. They wrote down what he had said and then went off home. Since I was at the station, I did some more questioning and offered the guitar to the police for fingerprinting. They filled out paperwork and told me that the only way that the ‘theifs’ fingerprints could be identified were if he had committed a crime before, which is likely, but not FOR SURE. I found this weird, because in Canada, I was fingerprinted in primary school. Different laws are weird. They couldn’t even take a still from the tape and post pictures around asking people to identify him. That’s American laws, I guess.
I cancelled my credit and bank cards from the police station and went to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia to open up an account. Since 1:00 pm NSW time is 9:00 pm Ontario time, I wasn’t able to do any money wiring from my BMO checkings, into my new account, until morning.
I went to the ‘community help’ building and they were able to get me two nights of free stay in the same hotel Kyle and Adam were in. And people all around the town, knew me by now, so I was able to get a free calling card and a free meal too.
I messed up the times this morning and woke up at 7:00 am and was unable to reach my home branch. So tomorrow I am going to call around 3:00 am and see what I can manage.
I lost my wallet, which was my dads. All my ID, aside from my passport. My macbook with all my saved documents and songs. $80AUD cash. And my newly purchased camera with photos I hadn’t posted.

Pray, hope, do what you do to send my all your good energy and wishes from Canada. I really hope the fingerprinting works out and this guy gets off the streets or something.
Still hopefully optimistic,
John
No ‘GOOD’ internets in these parts…. We’re heading north today, but waiting a couple hours for the rain to die down. There isn’t anything to do really in this town with the rain. We may do the “Koala Boardwalk” Kyle may die of some disease.
